Easter Sunday Devotion

Easter Sunday Devotion — The Risen Christ and Living Hope

Scripture (KJV):
“He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.” — Matthew 28:6

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” — 1 Peter 1:3

Meditation

Easter is not merely the celebration of an event—it is the declaration of victory. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the foundation of all Christian hope. Without it, faith collapses; with it, everything stands secure.

The Puritans saw the resurrection not only as Christ’s triumph, but as the believer’s assurance. John Owen wrote, “The death of Christ is the death of death.” If Christ is risen, then sin is conquered, justice satisfied, and eternal life secured.

Notice the angel’s words: “He is not here… He is risen, as he said.” The resurrection vindicates every promise Christ made. What He spoke, He accomplished. What He began, He finished.

But the resurrection also transforms the believer. Peter declares that we are “begotten again unto a lively hope.” This is no dead religion, no empty formality—it is a living hope grounded in a living Savior.

Where Christ lives, life must follow. The same power that raised Him works in His people, raising them from spiritual death to newness of life. The resurrection is not only something to believe—it is something to experience.

Yet how often do we live as though Christ were still in the tomb—fearful, defeated, bound by sin? Easter calls us out of the grave of unbelief. The stone is rolled away, not just from Christ’s tomb, but from the hearts of His people.

Thomas Brooks wrote, “A Christian’s hope is a living hope—it will not die when he dies.”Because Christ lives, we shall live also.

Personal Reflection

Do you live in the reality of the resurrection? Consider whether your life reflects a “lively hope.” Are you walking in victory over sin, or still bound by it?

Reflect on areas where fear or doubt has taken hold. The empty tomb declares that Christ has overcome—believe it, and live accordingly.

Prayer

Risen Lord Jesus,
I bless Thee that Thou art not in the grave, but seated in glory. Thou hast conquered sin, death, and hell, and hast secured eternal life for Thy people.

Forgive me for living as though Thou wert still dead—when I fear, doubt, or cling to sin. Raise my heart to heavenly things, and cause me to walk in the power of Thy resurrection.

Grant me a lively hope, rooted in Thy finished work. Let the reality of Thy victory shape my thoughts, govern my actions, and sustain me in every trial.

As Thou hast risen, so raise me daily to newness of life, until that great day when I shall be raised incorruptible and dwell with Thee forever.

I rejoice, for Thou art risen indeed.
Amen.
