The Fruit Is the Evidence
Scripture: Galatians 5:22–23 (KJV)
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance...”
Personal Reflection
How can we recognize a life genuinely filled with the Holy Spirit? Scripture directs our attention not primarily toward spectacular experiences but toward transformed character.
The evidence is fruit.
Love replaces selfishness. Joy survives difficult circumstances. Peace steadies the troubled heart. Longsuffering endures difficult people. Gentleness governs our treatment of others. Goodness shapes our actions. Faith produces steadfastness. Meekness restrains pride. Temperance brings our appetites under control.
The Spirit-filled life is therefore not proved by how dramatically a person describes his experiences but by how deeply Christ is transforming his character.
The manuscript makes this distinction particularly clear: being led by the Spirit means killing sin, pursuing practical holiness, refusing the world's mold, and delighting in obedience. Spirit-filled Christianity is not merely, “I had an experience.” It is, “I am being changed.”
This gives us a searching standard for self-examination.
It is possible to know theology and remain harsh. We can participate enthusiastically in worship and remain unforgiving. We can speak confidently about spiritual things while lacking humility and self-control.
But the Holy Spirit is the Holy Spirit. Where He rules, holiness increasingly appears.
Fruit develops gradually. An apple tree does not produce mature fruit overnight. Likewise, sanctification normally occurs through years of Scripture, prayer, repentance, trials, obedience, and communion with God.
The question is not whether you have reached perfection. The question is whether spiritual fruit is growing.
Contemplation
Which fruit of the Spirit is presently least evident in my character?
Puritan Quote
Thomas Watson wrote:
“Sanctification is a principle of grace savingly wrought, whereby the heart becomes holy.”
Prayer
Holy Spirit, cultivate Your fruit within me. Remove selfishness, pride, impatience, and uncontrolled desires, and increasingly reproduce the character of Christ in me. Amen.
Application
Choose one fruit of the Spirit and intentionally demonstrate it toward someone who normally tests your patience.
