Take Up the Sword
Scripture: Ephesians 6:17 (KJV)
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Personal Reflection
God has not sent His children into spiritual warfare unarmed. He commands us to put on the whole armor of God, and among those weapons is the “sword of the Spirit”—the Word of God.
The connection is important. The sword belongs to the Spirit. He inspired the Word, illuminates its truth, brings it to our remembrance, and uses it to expose Satan's lies. Through Scripture He dismantles our excuses, strengthens faith, and nourishes spiritual growth.
Consider how Jesus responded when Satan tempted Him in the wilderness. Again and again came the answer: “It is written.”
That must become our pattern.
When Satan says, “God has forgotten you,” Scripture answers that He will never leave nor forsake His people.
When the flesh says, “This sin will satisfy you,” Scripture reminds us that the pleasures of sin last only for a season.
When fear whispers, “Everything is falling apart,” Scripture declares that God works all things according to the counsel of His own will.
But a sword left in its sheath provides little assistance in battle.
We must know the Word before temptation comes. Read it. Memorize it. Meditate upon it. Store it within your heart.
Spiritual warfare is not won through emotional excitement or human determination. We stand by the Spirit's power using the weapon He Himself has provided.
The enemy has lies.
God has given us truth.
Take up the sword.
Contemplation
When temptation comes, do I immediately answer it with Scripture, or do I attempt to reason with it in my own strength?
Puritan Quote
Thomas Watson wrote:
“The Word is the field and weapon of our spiritual warfare.”
Prayer
Holy Spirit, teach me to wield Your Word faithfully. Bring Scripture to my mind when temptation comes and use Your truth to expose every lie of the enemy. Amen.
Application
Memorize one KJV verse specifically addressing the temptation or fear with which you struggle most frequently.
