We have been looking at striving or pursuing personal holiness. From Jonathan Edwards' resolutions we have found some guidance to achieve this type of holy walk. We have seen that we are to do all for the glory of God and put away all sin. Today, we consider the link between eternity and the present. What one does while in this life determines their destination in the future. We are all going to exist eternally; the only issue is where? Too many believe that God will wink or overlook sin. He will not; any sin not covered by the blood will be addressed at the judgment. For those in sin, damnation awaits. We need to be mindful of this as it will affect our holy walk as well as our desire to reach the lost.
Edward's resolution number 19 states: "Resolved, never to do any thing, which I should be afraid to do, if I expected it would not be above an hour, before I should hear the last trump." If you thought that the final judgment would be within one hour, would you do what you are about to do? This is a sobering thought; however, since the final trump could be within one hour, is it not a proper consideration? This is a way to strive for holiness; living our lives in the shadow of eternity.
Today consider your ways. Live each moment as you would live if you knew within one hour you would face King Jesus in judgment. To the one pursuing holiness, this is not frightening, it is joyful. May you have that joy in your heart that you might hear the final trump with gladness.
