We are still looking at achieving personal holiness. We have learned from Jonathan Edwards' resolutions how he lived his life to the glory of God. We have seen that we are to live to bring glory to God, put away all sin, live with the knowledge of the link between eternity and the present, and have personal discipline. Today, we continue to look at the necessity of personal discipline. Discipline can help neutralize lukewarmness. Just like the child's game of paper, rock, and scissors, discipline can assist you to counter those feelings that we all get at one time or another. Sometimes, the things of life drag us down and we don't feel spiritual. It may come from sickness, work, or affliction. During these times, we must remain disciplined and continue to do all we can to bring glory to God.
Edwards' resolution number 61 says: "Resolved, that I will not give way to that listlessness which I find unbends and relaxes my mind from being fully and fixedly set on religion, whatever excuse I may have for it-that what my listlessness inclines me to do, is best to be done, etc. May 21, and July 13, 1723." “Listlessness” meant that state of mind that was less than fully fixed on spiritual things. It meant to lose your spiritual edge, be lukewarm. We are to fight against being lukewarm and one way to fight is to be disciplined in the things of God.
Today, if you are having a lukewarm day continue to do those things that discipline requires: Bible study, prayer, church attendance, and reading good Christian books. As you continue to do all for the glory of God, you will find the lukewarm experience departing. God is faithful so keep your trust in Him.
