Trusting God When You Cannot Understand
Scripture
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5
Personal Reflection
One of the greatest struggles in the Christian life is trusting God when circumstances do not make sense. We naturally seek explanations. We want to know why trials come, why suffering lingers, and why God sometimes appears silent. Yet Scripture never commands us to understand everything—it commands us to trust.
Faith is often forged in confusion. The believer must learn that God’s wisdom infinitely surpasses human understanding. What appears chaotic to us is perfectly ordered by Divine Providence. Joseph could not understand the pit, the prison, or the betrayal of his brothers at the time, yet years later he declared, “Ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:20).
Storms expose the weakness of human understanding and drive us toward dependence upon God. The Christian who walks by faith learns to rest not in visible explanations but in the unchanging character of God. He is too wise to err and too loving to act without purpose.
Contemplation
Thomas Watson wrote, “Where reason cannot wade, faith must swim.”
Are you demanding explanations from God—or learning to trust Him without them?
Prayer
Lord, help me trust Your wisdom even when I cannot understand Your ways.
Application
When unanswered questions arise today, respond with trust rather than anxiety.
