The Discipline of God

The Discipline of God

Scripture

“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth.”— Hebrews 12:6

Personal Reflection

God’s discipline is often misunderstood. Many view hardship as punishment, when in reality it is the loving correction of a Father. The believer is not condemned, but refined. Discipline is evidence not of rejection, but of sonship.

Storms sometimes serve as God’s tool to correct, redirect, and sanctify His people. He prunes what is unfruitful, strengthens what is weak, and humbles what is proud. Though discipline may be painful, its purpose is always good—to conform us to the image of Christ.

To receive discipline rightly requires humility and faith. The believer must resist bitterness and instead submit to God’s hand, trusting that His purposes are perfect.

Contemplation

Thomas Boston wrote, “Afflictions are God’s furnace to purify His people.”
Are you resisting God’s discipline—or receiving it as an act of love?

Prayer

Lord, give me a submissive heart to receive Your correction.

Application

Ask God today what He may be teaching you through your present trials.
