Today we look at one aspect of yesterdays answer to defeating temptation and boredom: unceasing prayer. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says: "Pray without ceasing." Paul writes this as a command that is to be on going. How can this be? How are we to pray without ceasing? We are going to spend a few days developing this type of prayer. You must know that Paul would not command something that is impossible to do.
Adam Clarke described prayer as: "Ye are dependent on God for every good; without him ye can do nothing; feel that dependence at all times, and ye will always be in the spirit of prayer; and those who feel this spirit will, as frequently as possible, be found in the exercise of prayer." Do you truly feel a dependence on God moment by moment? You should as your next breath comes from His loving control of the earth and our atmosphere. Without His guidance and providence, we would certainly die. It is His love for His creatures that causes Him to provide for us. Yet, we often taken Him for granted as we go about our daily lives. We should acknowledge our dependence on Him continually.
There is an old saying, "stop and smell the roses." The saying encourages us to slow down and take notice of life's surroundings. Today, I encourage you to slow down and acknowledge God in every aspect of your life. Look at your spouse and children in a different light. See them as blessings of God. Look at your job as God's method of providing for you. Look at your friends as the people God has chosen to bring comfort in the seasons of your life. If you find yourself alone, know that you are never alone as He is with you. Today, stop and see the hand of God in your life and give Him thanks.
