The Power of "Amen": A Reflection on Trusting in God's Word

Scripture:  "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life." – John 5:24

Understanding the Significance of "Amen"

"Amen" is more than just a customary ending to a prayer—it is a declaration of trust, a request for God’s confirmation, and an acknowledgment of His unwavering faithfulness. It is a word rooted in certainty, reliability, and divine affirmation.

When we say "Amen" at the end of a prayer, we are asking God to bring about, confirm, and establish what we have just spoken. We are not merely saying "the prayer is finished", but rather, "Lord, let it be so according to Your will."

What makes Jesus' use of "Amen" remarkable is that He spoke it before His words, not after. By saying "Verily, verily,"Jesus was affirming that His words carried the full authority of God before they were spoken—a declaration that only the Son of God could make.

Contemplation: How Do I Value the Words of Christ?

Jesus spoke with divine certainty, knowing that everything He said was fully backed by the Father. If God approved the words of Jesus before they were even spoken, how should that impact the way we listen and obey?

Ask yourself:

• Do I receive Jesus’ words as absolute truth, or do I hesitate to fully embrace them?

• When I read Scripture, do I seek understanding, or do I dismiss difficult teachings?

• Am I actively applying Christ’s instructions, or do I only follow what feels comfortable?

A disciple of Jesus does not merely listen—they run toward His wisdom. Avoidance of His truth leads to spiritual stagnation, but embracing it leads to life and transformation.

Personal Reflection: Living in Alignment with His Word

If Jesus spoke with certainty, and if His words were fully affirmed by the Father, then shouldn't we take His commands seriously? His teachings on love, humility, obedience, and repentance are not suggestions—they are directives for how we are meant to live.

Consider:

• Do I seek out His truth daily, or do I neglect time in His Word?

• When conviction comes, do I change or do I justify my own desires?

• How can I grow in boldness to follow Christ fully, without hesitation?

True disciples embrace God’s commands, not avoid them. They run to Him in surrender, trusting that His ways are better than their own.

A Prayer for Obedience and Bold Faith

Heavenly Father, Thank You for the certainty of Your Word, for the truth that never wavers and the promises that stand firm. I confess that there are times when I hesitate, when I seek comfort over obedience. Forgive me for my reluctance to fully embrace Your instruction.

Teach me to run to Your wisdom, to seek You with all my heart, and to live as a disciple who trusts in the words of Jesus without reservation. May my life reflect a heart that delights in Your truth, and may my prayers be spoken with faith, knowing You confirm what aligns with Your will.

Let my "Amen" always be spoken in expectation of Your power at work in my life. May my trust in You deepen, and may my obedience be unwavering.
