Surrendering All to Jesus: A Reflection on Luke 18:22-23
Scripture: "Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich." – Luke 18:22-23
The Call to Surrender
The rich man approached Jesus seeking eternal life, hoping for an answer that aligned with his current lifestyle. Instead, he received a challenge—to let go of the one thing that bound him to this world: his possessions.
Jesus’ words were not just about wealth but about the heart. The rich man trusted in his earthly security rather than in God’s provision. He wanted both discipleship and comfort, but Jesus made it clear—following Him requires complete surrender.
Contemplation: What Am I Holding Onto?
The issue is not merely wealth but attachment. Whether rich or poor, we can all cling to things that hinder our full devotion to Christ.
Take a moment to reflect:
What possessions, habits, or desires am I unwilling to surrender?
Is my security found in earthly comfort, or do I trust that God will provide?
If Jesus asked me to give up something dear to me for His sake, would I do it joyfully?
Discipleship is not about percentages—it is about ownership. Everything we have belongs to the Master, and we are merely stewards of what He entrusts to us.
Personal Reflection: Living as a True Disciple
Jesus calls us to want to give, not just to be willing. When discipleship takes root in the heart, giving becomes a desire rather than a duty.
Ask yourself:
Do I see my possessions as mine, or do I view them as entrusted to me by God?
How can I cultivate a heart that joyfully gives instead of holding back?
Am I actively listening for the Holy Spirit’s direction to give?
True disciples seek the welfare of others, reflecting Christ’s generosity. Giving is not loss—it is gain.
A Prayer for Surrender and Generosity
Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that all I have belongs to You. Forgive me for the times I have clung to earthly treasures instead of placing them at Your feet.
Help me to fully surrender, to live as a true disciple who desires to give, not just obeys reluctantly. Open my eyes to the needs of others, and make my heart sensitive to Your guidance.
Teach me to trust You in all things—knowing that as I give, I am investing in treasures far greater than this world can offer. May my life reflect Your generosity, and may my heart be free from anything that keeps me from following You fully.
In Your name, Amen.
Final Thought:
Discipleship is not just willingness—it is eager surrender. Jesus asks for our whole hearts, not just a portion. Will you let go and trust Him completely?
