Devotion: "I Have Come Because of Your Words"
Daniel 10:12 (ESV)
Today’s Scripture brings a sobering and humbling thought: "I have come because of your words." Imagine: the words spoken by a frail, mourning man in Babylon summoned an angel from the courts of Heaven. Daniel’s heart was heavy — for Jerusalem, for the people of God — and he expressed that burden not with elaborate rituals, but with simple, sincere words directed to the living God.
This challenges me deeply. How often do I forget the weight and reach of my words? Daniel’s prayerful cries moved Heaven itself. My words — whispered in private, muttered in frustration, or spoken in bold faith — are heard just as surely by the Lord. Nothing I say is lost in the air; all of it is recorded, weighed, and often, acted upon.
Words are not harmless. They are not insignificant. They are either seeds of blessing or seeds of sorrow. I shudder to think of the careless words I have spoken — quick complaints, sharp criticisms, faithless grumblings. How easily my speech can reflect the world rather than the Word. Jesus reminds me that the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart (Matthew 12:34). What does the tone of my conversation reveal about the state of my heart?
In Daniel’s case, words of humility, mourning, and earnest seeking brought the presence of an angel and the assurance that God had heard. What might my words bring today? Are my words constructing bridges for God’s blessings, or walls that hinder His work?
It is a tender mercy that God hears even the broken, faltering prayers we pray. And it is a call to repentance that He also hears the careless words we toss aside. Today, I feel the Spirit urging me to lay every word at the feet of Jesus — to let my speech be seasoned with grace, rooted in truth, and full of the fragrance of Christ.
Contemplation:
Have I used my words this week to build up or to tear down?
Are my conversations saturated with the love and truth of Jesus, even when speaking about difficult matters?
If Heaven’s messengers came in response to my words today, what would they be bringing?
Prayer:
Gracious Father,
I am both comforted and convicted that You hear every word I speak. Thank You for being so near, so attentive, even when my words have been unworthy of Your holiness. Forgive me, Lord, for the careless, hurtful, and faithless words that have sprung from my lips. Cleanse my heart, so that what flows out would be life-giving, healing, and glorifying to You.
Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Let my words today call forth Your blessings, not Your grief. Help me to forgive those whose words have wounded me, just as Christ forgave from the cross.
Teach me to speak with wisdom and kindness, reflecting Your love in every conversation. May my words move Heaven — not because they are eloquent, but because they are true, humble, and full of faith.
In Jesus' powerful name I pray,
Amen.I’m
