The God Who Sees Me

Devotion: “The God Who Sees Me”

Genesis 16:13 (KJV)
"And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me..."

In a moment of despair, rejection, and loneliness, Hagar—a servant, a foreigner, a woman used and cast aside—received a revelation so intimate and profound that it echoes through history: God sees me. Not just humanity in general. Me. A woman fleeing from cruelty into a barren wilderness with no plan and no protector. But even in that deserted place, God saw her, called her by name, and met her with grace.

There are days when I feel unseen. Not in the dramatic sense of being abandoned, but in the quiet struggles that pile up unnoticed. The financial pressure I don’t voice, the fatigue I push through, the prayers that seem unanswered. But then I’m reminded—He sees me. Like Hagar, I may not understand why I’ve ended up where I am, but I can rest in the truth that I have not gone unseen or unheard by God.

Recently, my wife and I went through a complex refinance process during a volatile market. We prayed for the known challenges—the paperwork, the terms, the approval. But what we didn’t see was the looming collapse of the mortgage company we were working with. Just days after we closed, the company went bankrupt. We hadn’t even thought to pray about its solvency, but God—who sees what we cannot—protected us. We didn’t just receive an answer to our request. We received grace upon grace for what we didn’t even know to ask.

This is the God we serve—El Roi, the God who sees. He sees your fears, your frustrations, your faithfulness. He sees your silent tears and your unspoken prayers. Even when you feel overlooked by others or forgotten in your circumstances, He is watching, and more than that, He is caring. You are never invisible to Him.

Contemplation:

  • Are there areas in your life where you feel unseen or forgotten?

  • Can you rest in the truth that God sees you completely and is working even when you do not recognize it?

  • When has God moved on your behalf in ways you only saw in hindsight?

Prayer:
Father God,
Thank You for being El Roi, the God who sees me. I praise You that even when I feel forgotten, You know my name and my story. You see where I’ve been and where I’m going. You are never surprised by what lies ahead, and You are never late in acting on my behalf.
Today I rest in the truth that You are working in every circumstance of my life—both the ones I recognize and the ones I do not. Thank You for Your quiet providence, Your perfect timing, and Your unshakable love. Help me trust You more, especially in the wilderness seasons.
Thank You for Jesus Christ, who was not only seen by You but sent by You to redeem me fully. My life, my hope, and my eternity are in Your faithful hands.
In His name I pray,
Amen.
