The Gospel Comes with Power

The Gospel Comes with Power

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:4–5 (KJV)

“And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”

Personal Reflection

The gospel does not depend upon human cleverness.

Paul deliberately rejected confidence in persuasive techniques, polished rhetoric, and the wisdom of men. His confidence rested in the Holy Spirit applying God’s truth with divine power.

That distinction desperately needs to be recovered.

It is possible to manipulate emotions without producing conversion. Music can create an atmosphere. Stories can produce tears. Charismatic personalities can persuade people to make decisions. But only the Holy Spirit can raise a spiritually dead sinner to life.

True gospel preaching therefore depends upon two inseparable realities: the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. The Word cuts, pierces, exposes, and discerns. The Spirit takes that Word and drives its truth into the heart.

This should profoundly affect both evangelism and preaching.

We must proclaim the truth plainly. We preach God’s holiness, man’s sinfulness, Christ’s substitutionary death, His resurrection, repentance, faith, judgment, and grace. Then we pray for God to do what no preacher can accomplish.

The preacher cannot regenerate.

The evangelist cannot create faith.

The parent cannot convert the child.

The theologian cannot argue someone into the kingdom.

But God can save.

This frees us from manipulation while driving us toward prayer. We proclaim Christ faithfully and depend upon the Spirit completely.

Our confidence is not in the eloquence of the messenger.

Our confidence is in the power of God working through His gospel.

Contemplation

When speaking to others about Christ, am I trusting my ability to persuade or God’s ability to save?

Puritan Quote

John Owen wrote:

“The Holy Ghost is the immediate author of all grace in us.”

Prayer

Holy Spirit, give power to the proclamation of Your Word. Keep me from trusting human methods and make me faithful in proclaiming Christ and dependent upon You to save. Amen.

Application

Before speaking to someone about Christ, pray specifically that the Holy Spirit will apply the truth of Scripture to that person’s heart.
