Blessed in Your Going and Your Coming

Blessed in Your Going and Your Coming

Scripture Reading:

“Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.”
— Deuteronomy 28:6 (ESV)

Personal Reflection

There’s something deeply comforting in the thought that God's blessing follows me like my shadow — always present, always close, whether I see it or not. Deuteronomy 28:6 gives a promise of continual covering: when I leave the house and when I return, when I venture into the unknown and when I settle back into the familiar.

The phrase “going out and coming in” in Hebrew thought isn’t just about physical movement — it’s a picture of all of life’s activity. Whether I’m going to war, going to work, traveling, or returning home after a long day, this blessing covers all of it. It is a comprehensive promise for those who walk in covenant obedience.

But the part that stirs me most is the idea that God’s blessing can be preventative. How many things haven’t happened to me because of His unseen hand? How many accidents, crises, losses, or attacks have been silently blocked by God’s favor before they ever reached me? I may never know — and that, to me, is one of the most humbling realities.

This moves me to gratitude, and also to action. I want to learn more about how God desires me to live. The ancient rabbis were right to emphasize obedience to Torah — because it wasn’t just about rule-keeping. It was about walking in step with the God who desires to bless and protect His people.

Contemplation

  • What unseen dangers might God have protected me from just this week?

  • Do I view God's blessing as something active in both my comings and my goings?

  • Am I cultivating a life of obedience that invites God’s continual favor?

  • What would my life look like if I truly believed that God's blessing walks with me everywhere?

Let this blessing humble us and stir us to search the Scriptures not as obligation, but as a doorway to the life God desires for us.

Prayer

Father in Heaven,
Thank You for being the God who goes before me and comes behind me. Thank You that Your blessing is not confined to a place or a moment — it is with me when I rise and when I rest, when I go out into the world and when I return home.

Forgive me for the times I’ve taken Your hand of protection for granted. Today I thank You not only for what You’ve done, but for what You’ve prevented. The accidents that never happened, the dangers that never reached me, the griefs that never came — all because of Your mercy and unseen care.

Lord, teach me to walk in joyful obedience. Help me to love Your Word and to search it like hidden treasure. Let my desire to be near You grow stronger than any fear, any pride, or any distraction.

May I live each day under the shadow of Your blessing — in every coming and every going.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Key Takeaway:

God’s blessing doesn’t just give you good things — it can also protect you from things you’ll never even know about. Live in obedience, and the blessing will follow you everywhere you go.
