More Than Enough: The Surpassing Blessing
Scripture Reading:
“And the LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, within the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you.”
— Deuteronomy 28:11 (RSV)
Personal Reflection
There’s a richness in this verse that stirs both awe and humility. God does not simply promise His people provision — He promises abundance. The Hebrew verb hotir here means “to give more than enough,” “to surpass,” or “to overflow.” This is not the shallow message of modern prosperity teachings that equate blessing with luxury. This is something deeper — a promise that the obedient child of God will walk in surpassing sufficiency, in every good work.
When I read this verse in light of Jewish commentary, I see that the blessing is meant to spill over — not so I can build personal empires, but so I can reflect God's goodness to the nations. God's abundance is a witness. It draws attention not to the blessed, but to the Blesser.
Obedience, then, is not just about personal morality. It’s about aligning myself with God's heart so that His power and provision can be made known through my life. That might mean visible prosperity. Or it might mean faithful fruitfulness in a place of suffering — like Jesus among sinners, or missionaries among the forgotten.
The core truth is this: God delights to bless His people. He doesn’t bless out of duty, but out of joy. And when I live obediently before Him — studying His Torah, applying His wisdom, listening to His Spirit — His joy becomes my strength, and His blessing becomes my testimony.
Contemplation
Do I believe God delights in blessing me — not only with what I need, but with overflow?
Am I walking in obedience so that God's blessing can rest upon my life and reflect His name to others?
Do I measure success by comfort or by faithfulness?
How might my obedience today open the door for God's overflowing grace in a specific area of my life?
Prayer
Father,
Thank You for being a God who blesses not sparingly, but richly — according to Your wisdom and delight. You promise not just enough, but more than enough, so that my life may reflect Your glory and goodness to others.
Forgive me when I doubt Your desire to bless, or when I chase blessings instead of obedience. Help me today to walk in all the light You’ve given me — to obey what I know, and to seek more of Your Word so I may know more of Your will.
Let my life overflow — not for self-glory, but as a living testimony to Your power. Whether You call me to lead or to serve, to comfort or to suffer, let me prosper in doing Your will.
I invite Your blessing not as a reward, but as a reflection of Your love and character.
In the name of Yeshua the Messiah, Amen.
Key Takeaway:
God's blessing is more than material — it's His delight expressed in your life when you walk in faithful obedience. Overflow is not the goal; obedience is. But when you obey, the overflow often follows.
