The Chains Must Be Broken

The Chains Must Be Broken

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 4:20 (KJV)

“For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.”

Personal Reflection

The gospel does not merely change our religious vocabulary. It changes our spiritual condition.

In salvation, God opens the prison, breaks the chains, drives out the tyrant, and brings the captive into liberty.

That is far different from merely adding Jesus to an unchanged life.

A person may learn Christian terminology, attend church, be baptized, and identify with Christianity while remaining enslaved to the same sins that have always ruled him. External religion cannot accomplish what only divine power can do.

Christ came to deliver sinners.

This does not mean Christians become instantly sinless. Remaining sin continues, and sanctification involves lifelong warfare. But something decisive has happened: sin is no longer king.

The believer can fight because the chains have been broken.

This truth guards us against two errors. First, we must reject a shallow profession of faith that leaves a person peacefully enslaved to sin. Second, we must reject despair when genuine Christians continue struggling against remaining corruption.

The question is not whether sin remains.

The question is whether its dominion has been broken.

The Christian may fall, but he cannot comfortably make peace with the master from whom Christ delivered him. The Spirit produces repentance, warfare, and an increasing hunger for holiness.

We therefore look back upon salvation and say with Paul:

“By the grace of God I am what I am.”

The chains did not fall because we became strong.

They fell because Christ is mighty to save.

Contemplation

Is there evidence in my life that Christ has broken sin’s dominion and created a genuine desire for holiness?

Puritan Quote

John Owen wrote:

“Sin aims always at the utmost.”

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for breaking the dominion of sin. Strengthen me through Your Spirit to live in the liberty You purchased and never willingly return to my former chains. Amen.

Application

Identify one sin from which Christ has delivered you and deliberately thank Him today for the change His grace has produced.
