We are continuing to look at walking in love. Ephesians 5:2 says: "And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour." What type of love are we to walk in? The word "love" here is agape and it means love, affectionate regard, goodwill, benevolence. With reference to love from God, it is His willful direction toward man. It includes God doing what He knows is best for us and not necessarily what we want. That is a love that is going to give us what we need even if it isn't what we want. This type of love is willing to face abuse and rejection from the one being loved. This can be very tough. Ever had to hold your child steady against their cries so the doctor could give them a necessary shot? If so, you know what this type of love looks like. You upset your child by restraining him so that the doctor can give him what he needs (but certainly not what he wants). This is an example of God's love to us.
John 3:16 is the best example: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Man didn't want a Savior to keep him from sin; instead, the Jews wanted a military leader to deliver them from the Roman occupation. Yet, God knew what man really needed and that agape love gave us Jesus to die for our sins.
Today, as you commit to walk in love know that at times it may be very difficult. The one you are attempting to love may reject you. Agape love doesn't quit or give up. It stands firm against rejection. As you walk in this type of love, you must not give up just because things look like they aren't working the way you think they should. Be persistent; don't give up; and walk in agape love.
