Devotion: The Depth of Faithfulness
Scripture:
“You shall not commit adultery.” — Exodus 20:14 (RSV)
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” — Matthew 5:27–28 (RSV)
Reflection:
At first glance, the Seventh Commandment may seem easy to uphold if we have not physically broken a marriage covenant. But Jesus' words in the Sermon on the Mount, and the insights of the Hebrew sages, remind us that God sees far beyond outward actions—He sees the heart.
According to both Jewish tradition and the teachings of Jesus, adultery begins internally. Lustful glances, flirtation, or crossing boundaries in friendship can violate this commandment. So can selfish business practices that harm another’s livelihood, for these too show a disregard for the dignity and rights of others.
God’s command here is not just about preserving the sanctity of marriage—it is about cultivating a life of integrity, honor, and respect for others. Our daily choices—how we interact with people, how we handle temptations, and how we treat others’ trust—speak volumes about our commitment to this commandment.
Contemplation:
Take a moment to examine your heart. Do your interactions with others reflect purity and integrity? Are there habits or thoughts that would dishonor someone else if exposed? Jesus invites us not merely to avoid sin, but to be transformed inwardly.
Ask yourself:
Do I honor others in thought as well as action?
Are there emotional or relational boundaries I’ve crossed or played with?
Have I interfered with another’s dignity—whether in relationships, in work, or in spirit?
Let the Living Torah—Jesus—be your example. His life was marked by purity, compassion, and honor in every relationship. We must follow Him not just in word, but in practice.
Prayer:
Lord of Holiness,
You see not just what I do, but what I think and feel. Cleanse my heart from all impurity and selfish desire. Teach me to live faithfully and to treat others with dignity and respect. Guard me from temptation, and give me the strength to honor You in every relationship—whether in word, thought, or action. Thank You for the gift of Your commandments, which reveal not only Your standards but also Your loving care for how we live. Make me faithful in all things, Lord.
Amen.
