Shalom

 Devotion: How Is Your Shalom?

Scripture:
“The LORD lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.”
—Numbers 6:26 (RSV)

Personal Reflection

We’ve all heard—and likely asked—the question: “How are you doing?” But how often do we really think about the answer, or intend to go beyond the surface? The Hebrew expression Mah shalomkah?—“How is your shalom?”—invites something deeper. It’s not just asking how your day is going; it’s asking, How is your soul? Are you whole? Is there peace in your heart, your relationships, your walk with God?

Shalom is far more than the absence of conflict. In Scripture, shalom encompasses health, security, harmony, prosperity, and spiritual well-being. It is the kind of peace only God can give—a peace that makes us whole. And it’s not earned; it’s spoken over us by our High Priest. Through Jesus Christ, the great High Priest, we are recipients of that same divine benediction.

It’s easy to forget this when life feels fractured—when finances are tight, relationships are strained, or health is failing. But God’s shalom isn’t dependent on circumstances. It is a gift that secures your soul even when the world shakes around you.

Contemplation

  • What does shalom look like in your life today?

  • Are there areas where you feel empty, broken, or overwhelmed?

  • Do you define peace by what’s happening around you—or by what God has promised to place within you?

Reflect on the truth that you have already been blessed with shalom if you are in Christ. It’s not a feeling you chase but a reality you receive.

You may not feel whole today, but you arewhole in Him. You may not feel at rest, but His peace guards your heart and mind. The question is not how your circumstances are, but how your shalom is—and God says, “It is well.”

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for blessing me with shalom. Even when I feel broken or uncertain, Your peace is my anchor. Help me not to measure my well-being by my feelings or by what I see, but by the truth of Your Word. I receive Your gift of peace—wholeness, health, safety, and completeness in Jesus. Teach me to walk in that peace daily and to reflect it to others.
In the name of the Prince of Peace, Amen.

Questions for Further Reflection

  1. How would your day change if you began by asking God to guard your shalom?

  2. What specific area of your life needs to come under the blessing of God's peace?

  3. Who around you needs to hear a word of peace—and can you be the one to bring it?

“Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.”
—2 Thessalonians 3:16
