Integrity

Devotion: Integrity Beyond Possessions

Scripture:
“Thou shalt not steal.” — Exodus 20:15 (KJV)
“You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another.” — Leviticus 19:11 (RSV)

Reflection:

At first glance, the commandment “Thou shalt not steal” may seem straightforward—don’t take what doesn’t belong to you. But deeper study through the lens of Hebraic wisdom reveals a richer understanding. According to ancient sages, this commandment, as it appears among the Ten, primarily referred to the gravest form of theft—kidnapping, a crime that devalues human life itself. It’s grouped with murder and adultery because it, too, attacks the sanctity of the human person.

Yet even beyond this, Hebraic thought recognizes that theft takes many forms. Robbing someone of their dignity by ignoring their greeting, manipulating someone for personal gain, or gaining trust through deception—these are all subtle forms of theft. God’s law is not just about property; it’s about preserving honor, honesty, and human worth in all our dealings.

Contemplation:

Today, let the Spirit examine your heart.

  • Have you taken something that wasn’t yours—not just materially, but relationally or emotionally?

  • Have you withheld kindness or recognition someone deserved?

  • Have you stolen someone’s time, attention, or trust through manipulation or carelessness?

Embrace the beauty of God’s Torah, which probes not just our hands, but our hearts. His commands teach us not only what to avoid but how to become more like Him—just, truthful, and honoring to others. Integrity is not about legalism; it’s about reflecting God’s character in every detail of life.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
You are a God of truth and justice. I thank You for Your commandments, which are more than rules—they are windows into Your heart. Help me to see where I have stolen from others—not just things, but dignity, time, or respect. Show me how to walk in honesty and righteousness in every relationship. May I never rob others of what You have given them, and may my life be marked by integrity that brings glory to You.
Amen.
