Still Abiding

Devotion: Abiding in Jesus as Our Advocate

Scripture:
"If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you." — John 15:7 (KJV)

Reflection:
As we continue to reflect on John 15:7, we turn today to a deeply comforting and practical dimension of what it means to abide—to remain, to dwell, to stay—in Christ. Abiding in Jesus includes the idea of making Him our Advocate, much like a client entrusts their case to a lawyer or their health to a physician. When we abide, we surrender. We say, “Lord, my life, my concerns, my future—everything—I place in Your capable hands. You decide what’s best.”

This is a radical act of trust. It means we stop trying to control outcomes and instead rest in God’s perfect wisdom. Just as a client waits for the expert's direction, so must we wait on the Lord, trusting that His decisions are rooted in infinite love and flawless judgment.

Too often, we take back control after entrusting God with our lives. We become anxious, try to manipulate outcomes, or rely on others or ourselves. But Scripture reminds us: “He hath done all things well” (Mark 7:37). There is no failure in God’s track record. He has never mismanaged a life that was wholly entrusted to Him.

Contemplation Questions:

  1. Have I truly handed my case—my life—over to Jesus, or am I still trying to be my own advocate?

  2. When circumstances are difficult, do I default to worry or worship?

  3. What would it look like today to fully trust God’s handling of the area that worries me most?

  4. Who or what am I tempted to trust instead of Christ—money, people, institutions?

Prayer:
Heavenly Advocate,
Thank You for the invitation to abide in You. Thank You for being my Defender, my Counselor, and my Guide. Forgive me for the many times I take back control, forgetting Your flawless wisdom and unchanging love. Teach me to trust You fully—not just with my words, but with my heart and my choices. Help me to rest in the knowledge that You never lose a case. Today, I place my life in Your hands anew. Direct my path, and I will follow. Your will is my peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Challenge for Today:
Identify one area of your life where you’ve been playing the advocate instead of trusting Jesus. Write it down and pray specifically over it, releasing it into His hands. Then, every time worry creeps in today, say out loud: “Jesus is my Advocate—I trust Him.”
