Taming the Tongue

Devotion: Taming the Tongue — Honoring Truth in Love

Scripture:
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” — Exodus 20:16 (RSV)

Reflection:

At first glance, this commandment might seem limited to courtroom settings. But through the lens of Hebraic wisdom, we learn that God’s concern for truthfulness goes much deeper. This commandment guards not just against outright lies, but against any misuse of truth that harms another person.

The Hebrew concept of lashon hara—“the evil tongue”—is particularly sobering. It doesn’t just condemn lies and slander. It condemns even true statements when spoken with the intent or effect of placing someone in a negative light. That means gossip, sarcasm, or even a casually dropped comment about someone’s flaws—all fall under the weight of this command.

The rabbis compared gossip to murder. Why? Because a thief can return what he stole, but once a reputation is damaged by words, the harm often cannot be undone. God values the dignity of every person, and this commandment is a call to protect that dignity with our speech.

Contemplation:

  • Think about your recent conversations. Have you shared something that painted someone else in a poor light—even if it was true?

  • Have you listened passively to gossip or chuckled at a sarcastic remark?

  • Do your words uplift or quietly wound others?

Jesus taught that our words reveal what is in our hearts (Luke 6:45). If we are to reflect Him, we must discipline our tongues, speaking only what builds up, restores, and brings light. This doesn’t mean avoiding truth—it means sharing it with love, humility, and grace.

Prayer:

Lord of Truth,
I confess that my tongue has not always honored You. Too often I have spoken words that harmed rather than healed, that revealed rather than protected. Forgive me for every careless word and every moment I have contributed to division or hurt. Teach me to guard my speech and to speak only what is edifying, true, and full of grace. May my words reflect Your mercy and be a light in a world darkened by slander and gossip.
Amen.
