 Let There Be Light

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:6 (KJV)

"For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."

Personal Reflection

The first act of creation was not the work of man but the command of God: "Let there be light." In the same way, the first act of the new creation is not man's decision but God's sovereign work in the soul. Scripture reminds us that the Holy Spirit does for the sinner what He did for the dark, formless earth in Genesis. He shines divine light into a heart that is spiritually dead and blind. 

Before the Holy Spirit worked in us, we were content with darkness. We did not seek Christ because we could not truly see Him. We were satisfied with religion, morality, or the pleasures of sin. But when the Spirit came with the Word of God, everything changed. We began to see our guilt, God's holiness, and Christ's sufficiency. The same gospel that once seemed foolish suddenly became precious beyond measure.

This is why salvation is always a miracle. No preacher can manufacture it. No emotional appeal can produce it. No amount of religious activity can substitute for it. Only the Holy Spirit can turn on the light within a sinner's heart.

The believer should never forget that the light he now enjoys is entirely the result of God's grace. Every glimpse of Christ, every conviction of sin, and every assurance of forgiveness flows from the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, all praise belongs to God alone.

Have I thanked God recently for opening my eyes to the beauty and glory of Jesus Christ?

Prayer

Holy Spirit, thank You for shining Your light into my once-dark heart. Continue to reveal the glory of Christ to me through Your Word, and never allow me to lose wonder at Your saving grace. Amen.
