Scripture: Ephesians 6:17 (KJV)

"Take...the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

Personal Reflection

God has permanently joined two things together: His Spirit and His Word. Scripture teaches that the Spirit's chosen instrument is the Word of God. The Spirit does not ordinarily work apart from Scripture, and Scripture accomplishes its saving work through the power of the Spirit. 

This truth protects us from two common errors. Some rely upon emotional experiences while neglecting the Bible. Others accumulate biblical knowledge without seeking the Spirit's transforming power. God calls us to embrace both.

When we open the Scriptures prayerfully, we place ourselves where the Holy Spirit delights to work. He illuminates our understanding, convicts us of sin, strengthens our faith, and reveals the glory of Christ. The Bible is not merely information; it is God's living instrument for spiritual transformation.

This reality should also shape our evangelism. We need not invent clever methods or rely upon entertainment. God's appointed means remain the faithful proclamation of His Word under the power of His Spirit.

Where the Word is faithfully preached and the Spirit is pleased to work, sinners are awakened and saints are sanctified.

Do I approach God's Word expecting the Holy Spirit to speak powerfully through it?

Prayer

Lord, increase my love for Your Word. As I read it, may Your Holy Spirit continually illuminate my mind, convict my heart, and conform me to Christ. Amen.

Before reading your Bible tomorrow, ask the Holy Spirit specifically to reveal Christ through the passage.
