The Courage to Be Searched

From today until Resurrection Sunday, the devotions shall come from a booklet I wrote entitled, “The Whole Christian Life is Lent.” The premise is that the practices of Lent should not be restricted to a season but a year long daily practice.

The Courage to Be Searched

Scripture: Psalm 139:23–24

Doctrine

True repentance begins when the soul invites divine scrutiny.

Thomas Watson writes:

“Repentance is a grace of God’s Spirit whereby a sinner is inwardly humbled and visibly reformed. Till sin be bitter, Christ will not be sweet.”¹

Watson reminds us that self-knowledge is not natural; it is Spirit-given.

Reflection

We ask for peace but avoid exposure. Yet grace wounds before it heals.

Prayer

Search me, O God, and make sin bitter that Christ may be sweet.
