Biblical Devotion: Dead to Self, Alive in Prayer
Scripture
“I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
— Romans 12:1–2 (RSV)
Personal Reflection
Have you ever found yourself going through the motions in prayer? Saying words, perhaps even good ones, but sensing no life, no connection? The Apostle Paul’s instruction to present our bodies—our whole lives—as a living sacrifice speaks to this struggle. As a Jewish rabbi, Paul understood worship not as a mental exercise but as total submission. The Hebrew worldview didn’t compartmentalize soul and body. All of life—your work, your walk, your words, and your worship—was one unified offering.
To be dead to self doesn’t mean becoming emotionally numb or passive. It means that our desires, thoughts, and even our prayers are placed on the altar of God’s will. Our prayer life, if it is to be like Jesus’, must begin with surrender. Jesus said, “Not my will, but Thine be done.” If the Son of God prayed in submission, how much more must we?
Contemplation
Today, examine the posture of your heart in prayer. Are you presenting yourself to God as a living sacrifice—fully alive to Him, fully dead to self? Does your prayer reflect your willingness to pray what He wants, or are you clinging to your own agenda? Hebrew prayer (tefillah) involves deep self-examination, not just requests. Let your prayer be an act of worship, shaped by God’s hand and guided by His Spirit.
Ask yourself: If God answered all my prayers, would His kingdom be advanced or just my comfort?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You not with my demands, but with my surrender. I present my whole being to You—body, soul, and spirit—as a living sacrifice. Teach me to pray in the Spirit, to seek not my own will but Yours. Renew my mind by Your Word and lead me in prayers that align with Your purposes. Let my prayer life not be a ritual, but a living, vibrant communion with You. I trust You to provide all I need as I seek first Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
