Devotion: When Mercy Opens Heaven’s Ears

Devotion: “When Mercy Opens Heaven’s Ears”

Scripture Reading:

“He who closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself cry out and not be heard.”
— Proverbs 21:13 (RSV)

Personal Reflection:

Scripture doesn’t leave room for misunderstanding here: if we shut our ears to the cry of the poor, God will shut His ears to ours. That’s a sobering truth. It means that how we respond to the needs of the oppressed directly impacts the effectiveness of our prayers.

This isn’t about empty words or good intentions—it’s about action. The verse says, “He who closes his ear,” and commentators point out this is revealed not by what we say, but by what we do. A heart that refuses mercy cannot expect to receive mercy.

“With the merciful, God will show Himself merciful.” — Family Bible Notes

Thomas Haweis paints the picture vividly: the hard-hearted who send the poor away empty will themselves one day cry out and find no answer. Adam Clarke warns that those who stop their ears to the needy mirror the priest and Levite who passed by the wounded man in Jesus’ parable. In ignoring the poor, we ignore the heart of God.

Contemplation:

How serious are you about giving to the poor?

This verse shows that our relationship with the needy is not secondary—it is central to our walk with God. Mercy to the poor is not just charity; it is evidence of a heart aligned with His. God’s promises attach weight to this command: giving to the poor not only blesses them, it opens heaven’s ears to your cry.

What if every time you saw someone in need, you saw an opportunity to keep the lines of communication between you and God open and clear? What if you understood that showing mercy wasn’t only for their benefit, but for the health of your own soul and prayer life?

“He who gives to the poor feeds his own prayers.” — Adapted from Matthew Poole

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You for Your mercy to me. Forgive me for the times I’ve ignored the cry of the poor or excused myself from showing compassion. Soften my heart to see the needy the way You do.

Teach me to live generously—not for recognition, but to reflect Your love. Lord, I want my prayers to rise unhindered before You. Help me to open my ears to the cries around me so that heaven’s ears remain open to my cry.

Lead me to God-created opportunities today to show mercy. Let my actions speak louder than my words, and let my life reflect Your compassion.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Today’s Challenge:

Find one way to actively respond to the cry of the poor today. It could be meeting a physical need, offering encouragement, or showing kindness. As you do, remember that mercy doesn’t just bless others—it opens heaven’s ears to your prayers.
