Devotion: “Happy Is He Who Shows Mercy”

Devotion: “Happy Is He Who Shows Mercy”

Scripture Reading:

“He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.”
— Proverbs 14:21 (KJV)

Personal Reflection:

God’s Word makes it clear: how we treat the poor reflects our heart toward Him. This verse doesn’t just call us to pity the poor—it calls us to be gracious to them, to show favor and extend mercy. It’s not charity for the sake of duty; it’s love in action flowing from the heart of God.

The Hebrew word for “happy” in this verse is rich with meaning. It carries the sense of being uprightstraight, and walking in the way of true blessing. It’s not a fleeting emotional high; it’s a deep, soul-level joy that comes when our lives align with God’s heart.

“It is an affliction to be poor, a greater to be despised for it; yet this is the world’s way… happy is he, nothing is more truly its own reward, than such a gracious spirit.” — Thomas Haweis

When we show mercy to the afflicted, the oppressed, or those of low societal standing, we are joining in the work of Christ Himself. He who became poor for our sake calls us to reflect His compassion to those who carry the weight of need.

Contemplation:

How do you see the poor?

Are they an inconvenience, a problem to solve, or people precious to God? Scripture tells us that the poor are close to His heart (Psalm 41:1; Proverbs 19:17). To ignore them or despise them is to sin; to show mercy is to step into the very blessing of God.

This verse also carries a promise: those who are merciful will be happy. Not because they gain applause or recognition, but because they are walking in the footsteps of Jesus. True joy is found not in accumulation, but in compassion.

“Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.” — Matthew 5:7 (KJV)

Ask the Lord today to shift your perspective, to see the poor not as a statistic but as souls He loves, image-bearers He calls you to serve.

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You for Your heart of mercy toward me. Forgive me for the times I have ignored or despised those in need. Change my eyes to see the poor as You see them—precious, loved, and worthy of compassion.

Teach me to be gracious, not out of duty, but out of love. Make my life a conduit of Your mercy. Let my giving, whether of time, resources, or encouragement, flow from a heart transformed by Your grace.

And Lord, let the joy You promise in this verse be real in my life—not fleeting happiness, but the deep, abiding blessing that comes from walking in Your ways.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Today’s Challenge:

Find one practical way to show mercy to someone in need—whether it’s giving financially, offering encouragement, or simply showing kindness and respect. As you do, remember: in blessing others, you are stepping into the happiness and favor of God.
