Devotion: “God’s Guarantee to the Giver”

Devotion: “God’s Guarantee to the Giver”

Scripture Reading:

“He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.”
— Proverbs 19:17 (KJV)

Personal Reflection:

When you give to the poor, God Himself issues a guarantee: “I will repay.” This isn’t a suggestion or a vague promise—it’s a covenant assurance. The Hebrew word for “pay again” is shelam, derived from shalom. That connection is profound.

God’s repayment isn’t just about returning what you gave; it’s about giving you what money can’t buy—peace, wholeness, safety, and nothing missing in your lifeShelam speaks of being secure in mind and body, of being made complete. When you bless the poor, God says, “I will stand behind you as surety. I will restore. I will repay—not just with material provision, but with My peace covering your life.”

“He who gives to the poor will never lose by it; for God Himself becomes his paymaster.” — Charles Spurgeon

There is no investment on earth safer than this one. You are lending to the Lord, and His repayment carries the full weight of divine guarantee.

Contemplation:

What motivates your giving? Is it duty, guilt, or the joy of joining yourself to the Lord’s heart?

When you see someone in need, remember: you are standing at the doorway of a God-created opportunity. It may look small—a meal, a dollar, a kind word—but heaven sees it as an eternal investment. The return is not always measured in dollars but in shalom: security, restoration, blessing, and the wholeness only God can provide.

“The promise of repayment is not just provision, but protection and peace.”

Today, look for that moment when God puts a need before you. Don’t hesitate. You are lending to the Lord, and His guarantees are better than any earthly bank.

Prayer:

Father,
Thank You for this beautiful promise that when I show mercy to the poor, You Yourself guarantee to repay. Forgive me for the times I’ve doubted or held back. Open my eyes to see every opportunity as a divine appointment to join Your heart.

Lord, I don’t give to receive, but I trust in Your Word that says You will repay with peace, wholeness, and safety. Cover my life with Your shalom as I obey You. Let my giving reflect Your generosity and love to those who are precious to You.

Help me to walk in faith today, ready to seize every God-created situation to bless the poor. In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Today’s Challenge:

Be intentional about looking for one opportunity to give today—whether to a mission, a neighbor, or a stranger. As you do, speak this promise over your act of mercy: “Lord, I am lending to You, and I trust in Your repayment of peace and wholeness.”
