Devotion: “Go Now, Disciple”
Scripture Reading:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
— Matthew 28:19 (RSV)
Personal Reflection:
Yesterday, we saw that “Go” in Matthew 28:19 doesn’t require a passport or a megaphone—it means “as you go” through your everyday life. But what are we to do as we go? The Scripture is clear: disciple.
But here’s the key—the original Greek doesn’t say "make disciples" as though we are manufacturers of spiritual change. It says, “disciple” (matheteuo)—which implies teaching, modeling, and inviting others into a way of life. Discipleship is not an event—it is a lifestyle. It cannot be accomplished by clever marketing, catchy sermon series, or even handing out tracts—though those things may have a place.
Discipleship happens when your lifebecomes the teaching.
“Our Lord's command is not ‘Go and make converts,’ but ‘Go and disciple.’ The test of the Great Commission is not attendance but transformation.” — A.W. Tozer
Contemplation:
Who are you discipling today?
You may not have a title or a classroom, but you are discipling. Someone is watching you. Your coworkers, your children, your neighbors—they are reading the gospel through your actions. The question is, what kind of gospel are they reading?
The Greek word matheteuo carries the idea of forming a relationship so that someone is drawn to attach themselves to your Master. It’s not about pressuring someone into a decision—it’s about showing them a life that compels the question, “Who is your Teacher?”
Discipleship requires proximity. It requires sacrifice. It means living transparently enough that someone can see your flaws and still want to follow Jesus because of how you handle them.
“To disciple someone is to live in such a way that Christ is unavoidable.” — Anonymous
You cannot fulfill the Great Commission from a distance. Jesus’ method was personal, sacrificial, and slow—but it changed the world.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus,
You have called me not just to go, but to disciple as I go. Forgive me for thinking this was someone else’s job or something reserved for Sunday mornings. Help me to live in such a way that others see You in me. Make me a faithful follower whose life draws others to Your truth.
Help me not to shy away from the relationships that require time, vulnerability, and patience. Teach me to teach—not just with my words but with my walk. And as I go, let the testimony of my life say clearly, “I follow Jesus. Come walk with me.”
In Your name,
Amen.
Today’s Challenge:
Ask God to open your eyes to someone in your life who is watching you, perhaps unknowingly. As you go about your day, ask: What am I teaching them about my Master? Then live deliberately—go now, disciple.
