Devotion: “In Our Midst Always”
Scripture Reading:
“Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.”
— Matthew 28:20 (RSV)
Personal Reflection:
As Jesus gave His final instructions, He ended with a promise: “I am with you always.” Those words were not just for the eleven disciples on the mountain—they were for every believer who would follow Him. They were for you.
The Greek word for “with” is meta, which means in the midst, among, accompanying, sharing union. Jesus isn’t saying He’ll check in occasionally; He is saying, “I am right there, moment by moment, in everything you do.” He’s not distant. He’s not watching from the sidelines. He is living life with you.
And “always” doesn’t just mean “forever.” In Greek, it’s pas hemera—literally all of every day. Every second. Every breath. Every conversation. Every joy. Every failure. Even the moments you wish He didn’t see—He’s there.
“Wherever you are, Christ is. This is not a comfort for sinning, but a call to holiness and freedom.” — Adapted from John Calvin
Contemplation:
How would your day change if you truly believed Jesus was in your midst right now?
Would you speak differently to your spouse or children?
Would you approach your work with more diligence or integrity?
Would your worship feel more alive?
Would you confess what you’ve been hiding?
Jonathan Edwards lived as though every hour was his last on earth. Not in fear, but in freedom—because he knew the nearness of Christ transforms how we live. The awareness of His presence is not bondage; it’s liberation from hypocrisy and half-heartedness. It draws us into authentic obedience and joy.
Take a moment to examine your heart. Is there something you need to change because He is right here? Is there something you need to confess because He is in your midst?
“The Christian life is living every hour in the presence of God, knowing you will give account and yet knowing you are perfectly loved.” — A.W. Pink
Prayer:
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for the promise that You are with me—all of every day. Forgive me for living as if You were far away. Forgive me for the moments I ignore Your presence.
Teach me to walk in the freedom that comes from knowing You are right here—in my thoughts, my work, my conversations, and my worship. Let this awareness make me more honest, more humble, and more obedient.
Help me to live today as if it were my last hour, not in fear, but in joyful surrender to You. May my life reflect Your nearness and Your glory.
In Your name,
Amen.
Today’s Challenge:
Pause three times today and whisper to yourself: “Jesus is in my midst.” Let that truth shape how you speak, act, and think. Live every moment in the freedom of His constant companionship.
