Devotion: “The Promise of No Lack”
Scripture Reading:
“He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.”
— Proverbs 28:27 (KJV)
Personal Reflection:
God makes a bold promise: “He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack.” The Hebrew word for “lack” speaks of a state of ongoing need, of living in poverty without what is required to survive or thrive. In contrast, God promises that those who are generous to the poor will experience the opposite of lack—abundance.
This is not a prosperity gimmick; it’s a covenant principle. When you align your heart with God’s heart for the needy, you step into His flow of provision. It’s not always about overflowing bank accounts—it’s about living under God’s hand of sufficiency, where He meets every need according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19).
“Woeful is the condition of that man who has the word of God and the prayers of the poor against him.” — Matthew Henry
The warning is sobering. Those who hide their eyes from the poor invite curses instead of blessings. To “hide your eyes” isn’t just ignoring the problem; it’s choosing to shield your heart from compassion. And Scripture warns that such hardness of heart does not go unnoticed by God.
Contemplation:
Do you see the poor—or do you hide your eyes?
It’s easy to avoid the gaze of the needy because their pain makes us uncomfortable. But Proverbs 28:27 reminds us that closing our eyes to their suffering doesn’t protect us; it brings us under God’s discipline. The curses mentioned here are not empty threats—they reflect God’s seriousness about His people reflecting His heart of mercy.
Ask yourself: Am I living with open eyes and open hands? Or am I protecting my own comfort while ignoring the needs around me?
“Seek to bless the poor and you will be blessed. This is God’s promise to His obedient people.”
Prayer:
Father,
Thank You for this powerful promise that those who give to the poor will not lack. Forgive me for the times I’ve closed my eyes to the needs around me. Soften my heart and open my eyes to see people as You see them.
Help me to live with generosity, not out of fear of lack, but out of confidence in Your provision. Let my giving reflect Your character and let my life be a channel of Your blessing to those who are precious to You.
Lord, keep me from the curse of indifference. Teach me to walk in Your abundance by walking in Your mercy. In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Today’s Challenge:
Look for one practical way to bless someone in need today. It doesn’t have to be large; it simply needs to be intentional. As you give, speak this promise over your life: “Lord, I trust Your Word that those who give to the poor shall not lack.”
