Devotion: “Teach As You Go”
Scripture Reading:
"Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."
— Matthew 28:20 (RSV)
Personal Reflection:
We’ve walked through Matthew 28:19, exploring what it means to “go,” to “disciple,” to reach the “nations,” and to “baptize.” Now, Jesus brings His command full circle with the final instruction: “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
The Greek word here for “teaching” is didasko—to instruct, to explain by word of mouth. Unlike the word used earlier for “disciple” (matheteuo), which speaks of a lifestyle that reflects the Master, didaskobrings in the verbal component of discipleship. We are not only to live the truth—we are to speak it.
“Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary, use words.” — St. Francis of Assisi
But let’s be clear: Words are often necessary.
It is not enough to simply model godly behavior—Jesus says we must also teach His commands, explaining them clearly and consistently. This teaching isn’t reserved for preachers or scholars—it’s a command for every disciple.
You may not have a theology degree, but if you’ve been transformed by Christ, you have a testimony, and that testimony is your pulpit.
Contemplation:
Are you teaching as you go?
It’s easy to excuse ourselves. “I’m not eloquent.” “I don’t know enough.” “What if I say the wrong thing?” But Jesus didn’t say, “Teach perfectly.” He said, “Teach faithfully.” Your story—how Christ saved you, how He’s changed you, how He sustains you—is truth that teaches.
“God doesn’t call the equipped; He equips the called.” — Dwight L. Moody
And note this: the teaching is not just about doctrine—it’s teaching others to observe all that Jesus commanded. That means obedience-based discipleship, not just information transfer. We’re not just teaching what Jesus said—we’re teaching people how to walk like He walked.
So as you go today—through conversations, family meals, work meetings, text messages—look for opportunities to teach with both your life and your lips.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for entrusting me with the sacred task of teaching others Your truth. Forgive me for the times I’ve remained silent out of fear or insecurity. Remind me today that if I know You, then I have something worth sharing.
Help me not only to live a life that reflects Your love but also to speak words that lead others to obedience. Give me boldness to teach, patience to explain, and grace to represent You well. And thank You for Your promise that You are with me—even to the end of the age.
Let me teach as I go, empowered by Your Spirit and guided by Your Word.
In Your name I pray,
Amen.
Today’s Challenge:
Look for one opportunity today to teach someone something about Jesus—through your words, through a testimony, through Scripture, or even a simple encouragement. Don’t wait until you “feel ready.” If you know Christ, you are ready. Go and teach.
