Devotion: “Jesus Is the Same, So Where Is the Power?”
Scripture:
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” — Hebrews 13:8 (KJV)
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” — John 14:12 (KJV)
Personal Reflection
Do I live like Hebrews 13:8 is true? Does my life reflect the truth that Jesus is not only alive but actively working today through His people by the Holy Spirit? If Jesus truly said it was better for Him to leave so the Spirit would come (John 16:7), then my life should reflect that divine advantage. But does it?
In John 14:12, Jesus did not speak of spiritual elites, apostles only, or seminary graduates. He said “he that believeth on me.” That includes me. That includes you. And what are we supposed to be doing? The works He did.Preaching the Kingdom. Healing the sick. Casting out demons. Ministering in bold, Spirit-empowered compassion. Greater in number, greater in reach, because His Spirit is now poured out on all believers across all the earth.
Yet if I’m honest, I often trust my brakes more than I trust the present power of the Holy Spirit. I expect the brakes to stop my car. But do I expect the Spirit to work through me today in ways Jesus promised?
Contemplation
Ask yourself:
Do I truly believe that Jesus works through me today by His Spirit?
Do I see evidence of the Spirit’s activity in my life, family, or church?
Have I reduced the Holy Spirit to a comforting thought rather than a living presence?
The Holy Spirit is not semi-retired. He is not a part-time God. He is not confined to the book of Acts or to a select few. He is actively convicting the world of sin, guiding believers into truth, distributing gifts to the church, and glorifying Christ on the earth.
If my life does not show this, the problem is not with Jesus or His Spirit—it’s with my level of faith, surrender, and obedience.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You have not changed. You are the same Savior, the same Healer, the same Deliverer that walked this earth and turned the world upside down. Forgive me for living as though Your power has faded or that Your Spirit is distant. Stir in me a fresh hunger to walk in the fullness of Your promise.
I believe You have sent the Holy Spirit, not as a passive force but as a Person—powerful, present, and ready to act. Help me not only to mentally affirm Your Word, but to live in obedience to it. May my life testify that You are alive, and that Your Spirit still does the works You promised.
Fill me again, Holy Spirit. Teach me to trust You like I trust the brakes in my car or the parachute in freefall. Let my faith be active, risky, and full of expectancy. Let my church become a vessel of Your power and glory.
In the name of Jesus Christ, the unchanging One,
Amen.
Today’s Challenge
Take inventory of your faith today.
Are you walking in Spirit-empowered obedience or human-powered religion?
Ask the Lord to reveal one way you can step out in faith this week—praying for someone, serving boldly, or simply declaring His truth.
The same Jesus who turned water into wine, opened blind eyes, and rose from the dead is with you today. Let's live like it.
