Devotion – Suffering and the Cross
Scripture:
“He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” — Romans 8:32
Personal Reflection:
At the cross, providence looked most cruel. The sinless Son of God was delivered to death. Yet in that darkest moment, God was accomplishing the greatest good — salvation. If God worked redemption through what looked like defeat, I can trust Him to bring good through my sufferings as well.
Contemplation:
Do I let suffering blind me to the cross, or do I let the cross reframe my understanding of suffering? The cross proves that God’s purposes in pain are never wasted.
Quote (Murray):
“The cross is the supreme proof that God brings glory out of apparent defeat.”
Prayer:
Thank You, Father, that the cross reveals Your wisdom in suffering. Strengthen me to trust that if You gave Your Son for me, You will also give me everything I need in my trials.
Challenge:
When discouraged, read the crucifixion narrative (Matthew 27 or John 19). Reflect on how God’s greatest providential act looked like His greatest absence — yet was His greatest presence.
