Devotion: Pursuing Holiness for the Glory of God

Devotion: Pursuing Holiness for the Glory of God

Scripture:
“Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.” — Hebrews 12:14
“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” — 1 Corinthians 10:31

Personal Reflection:
Let us reflect on the need to live our lives in a way that brings glory to His Name. We must strive to live holy lives. The pursuit of personal holiness is not a side project for the believer—it is the very path to seeing the Lord. Hebrews 12:14 does not leave room for ambiguity: holiness is essential. The word "follow" is not passive—it carries the idea of chasing after something with intensity. Holiness must be pursued like a treasure.

Yet how often do we reduce holiness to external standards—what we wear, what we watch, or what we avoid? While self-discipline is important, true holiness is about consecration—a life entirely devoted and set apart for God. It is about our hearts, our motives, and our actions being oriented toward glorifying Him.

Jonathan Edwards, with remarkable insight and conviction, understood this. His very first resolution was clear: “Resolved, that I will do whatsoever I think to be most to God’s glory…” That kind of determination is rare today. We tend to compartmentalize our lives—church in one box, work in another, entertainment in a third. But holiness is not compartmentalized. It invades every aspect of our existence.

What would it look like for you to live every moment “to God’s glory”? Eating, drinking, working, conversing, even resting—what if all were acts of devotion? What if you lived as if your every breath could be an offering?

Contemplation:

  • Are there areas of your life that are not fully surrendered to the Lord?

  • Do you pursue holiness as vigorously as you pursue comfort, success, or security?

  • In your daily choices, are you consciously seeking the glory of God?

Let Jonathan Edwards' resolution inspire you—not as a heavy burden, but as a joyful challenge: to live your life in such a way that every part brings honor to the One who has saved you by grace.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
You are holy, and You have called me to be holy as You are holy. I confess that I often settle for mediocrity and outward appearances rather than the true, inner transformation You desire. Teach me to pursue holiness with vigor—not to earn Your love, but because I have received it. Let every thought, word, and deed be an offering for Your glory. Like Jonathan Edwards, may I resolve to do what brings You honor, no matter the cost. Thank You for Your grace that empowers my striving. Set me apart for Your purposes, and let my life be a light that reflects Your holiness in a dark world.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Challenge:
Choose one area of your life—your conversations, your entertainment, your work—and ask yourself: Is this bringing glory to God? Then ask the Lord to help you align that area more fully with His will. Keep reaching. Holiness is worth the pursuit.
