The Danger of a Hardened Heart
Scripture: Hebrews 3:12 (KJV)
"Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God."
Personal Reflection
Unbelief rarely appears all at once. More often it develops gradually through the hardening of the heart. A person begins neglecting God's Word, prayer becomes infrequent, worship loses its priority, and sin becomes increasingly acceptable. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the heart grows cold.
The writer of Hebrews warns believers to remain vigilant because unbelief is deceptive. Sin always promises freedom but delivers bondage. It whispers that disobedience is harmless while quietly leading the soul farther from fellowship with God.
Even genuine Christians must guard against practical unbelief. While saving faith cannot ultimately fail because Christ preserves His people, believers may experience seasons of spiritual dryness when they cease trusting God's promises as they should. During such times, God's Word calls us back to repentance, renewed faith, and daily dependence upon Christ.
The remedy for unbelief is not greater self-confidence but greater confidence in Christ. The more we behold His faithfulness, the more our hearts are strengthened.
Every day presents opportunities either to trust God's promises or to lean upon our own understanding. Walking by faith requires constant dependence upon the Lord who has promised never to leave nor forsake His people.
Contemplation
Are there areas where my heart has begun to grow cold toward God's Word or His commands?
Puritan Quote
John Owen wrote:
"Be killing sin, or it will be killing you."
Prayer
Lord, keep my heart tender toward Your truth. Preserve me from the deceitfulness of sin and strengthen my faith each day. Amen.
Application
Spend extra time reading Hebrews chapters 3 and 4, asking God to guard your heart from unbelief.
