The Heinousness of Unbelief

Scripture: 1 John 5:10 (KJV)

"He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar..."

Personal Reflection

Among all the sins condemned in Scripture, unbelief stands out because of whom it offends. When a person refuses to believe God's testimony concerning His Son, he is not merely doubting a doctrine—he is accusing the God of truth of being a liar. That is the astonishing statement of 1 John 5:10. Every rejection of Christ is an assault upon the very character of God.

This explains why unbelief is so grievous. God has given His testimony through the prophets, through the apostles, through the miracles of Christ, through His resurrection, and ultimately through the pages of Holy Scripture. To reject that testimony is to reject the God who cannot lie (Titus 1:2).

The believer should never read this passage with pride, but with humility. Apart from sovereign grace, every one of us would have remained in unbelief. The difference between the believer and the unbeliever is not superior intelligence or stronger character; it is the mercy of God opening blind eyes through the work of the Holy Spirit.

As Christians, we should tremble at every temptation to doubt God's promises. While saving faith struggles at times, it never ultimately rejects God's testimony. Instead, it returns repeatedly to Christ and His Word.

The more we understand the holiness of God, the more serious unbelief becomes in our eyes. Conversely, the more we understand the grace of God, the more grateful we become that He overcame our unbelief and brought us to saving faith.

Do I truly recognize unbelief as an offense against the character and truthfulness of God?

Prayer

Father, forgive every lingering doubt within me. Strengthen my confidence in Your perfect truth, and help me rest entirely upon Your faithful promises. Amen.
