Dead Men Cannot Save Themselves
Scripture: Ephesians 2:1 (KJV)
"And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins."
Personal Reflection
The Apostle Paul does not describe unbelievers as spiritually weak, wounded, or merely struggling. He describes them as dead. Nothing could be more comprehensive than death. A dead man cannot respond to invitations, improve his condition, or revive himself. He is completely helpless.
This truth offends human pride because we naturally want to believe we contribute something to our salvation. We like to imagine that we took the first step toward God or that we exercised enough wisdom to choose Christ while others refused Him. Scripture leaves no room for such boasting. If we were spiritually dead, then our salvation required nothing less than a miracle of divine grace.
The same God who spoke life into creation speaks life into dead sinners through the gospel. He opens blind eyes, softens hard hearts, grants repentance, and creates faith where none existed. Every conversion is a testimony to God's sovereign power rather than man's ability.
Understanding our former spiritual death also transforms the way we view other unbelievers. Instead of becoming frustrated by their blindness, we remember that we once shared the same condition. This produces compassion instead of arrogance and dependence upon the Holy Spirit instead of clever techniques.
Every believer should frequently remember where he once was. Such remembrance fuels humility, worship, and gratitude. We were dead, but Christ made us alive. We were hopeless, but God showed us mercy. We were lost, but the Good Shepherd sought and found us.
Salvation truly belongs to the Lord.
Contemplation
Do I view my salvation as a work of God's sovereign grace or as something I partially accomplished?
Puritan Quote
John Owen wrote:
"We contribute nothing to our new birth but the sin from which we need to be cleansed."
Prayer
Lord, thank You for making me alive in Christ when I was dead in sin. Keep me humble as I remember that every spiritual blessing I possess is a gift of Your grace. Amen.
Application
Spend time thanking God specifically for rescuing you from spiritual death and pray for someone who is still spiritually dead apart from Christ.
