The Heart of Unbelief

Scripture: Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV)

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

Personal Reflection

Unbelief does not begin in the intellect; it begins in the heart. Scripture teaches that the human heart is deceitful above all things. Left to ourselves, we naturally resist God's authority and suppress His truth.

Modern culture encourages people to "follow your heart." God's Word gives exactly the opposite counsel. The heart, apart from grace, is not a trustworthy guide. It justifies sin, excuses rebellion, and convinces us that we are better than we truly are.

This is why salvation must be supernatural. The Holy Spirit opens blind eyes, softens hard hearts, and grants repentance and faith. Without His gracious work, no sinner would willingly come to Christ.

The believer must also remain watchful. Though regenerated, we still battle remaining sin. Our hearts are prone to wander. Daily dependence upon God's Word protects us from drifting into practical unbelief.

The safest place for the Christian is beneath the authority of Scripture. There we learn to distrust ourselves and trust Christ.

Am I allowing God's Word to examine my heart, or am I trusting my own feelings?

Search me, O God, and reveal every hidden unbelief. Give me a heart that delights in Your truth. Amen.
