Luke 5: 8: "When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord." During the Lord Jesus Christ's earthly ministry, there were times that His disciples reacted in fear in His Presence. Notice how Peter's response ("Depart from me for I am a sinful man.") is similar to Isaiah's response ("I am undone."). Just as Isaiah said that he was a man of unclean lips, so Peter declares himself to be a sinner, even to the point of asking Jesus to depart from him. Like Isaiah, Peter recognized that he was in the presence of the Holy One. As believers, we need to remember that the Lord Jesus Christ has ascended into the glories of heaven and His appearance is breathtaking. The beloved disciple John fell at His feet as dead when he saw Him. There is too much familiarity in the church and it has caused us to reduce the sacredness and terror of our God to a friendly "grandpa." This should not be our approach. We need to take some time and in prayer remember Who we are talking with. He is Holy and we are not. We are sinners saved by grace. It wasn't our work that saved us. This is comforting news, but not so comforting that I should take it for granted. "Salvation is of the Lord." (Jonah 2:9) Don't forget that.
