2 Samuel 6: 6-7: "And when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God." David is bringing back the ark. There is a procession with singing, dancing and instruments. This is a moving worship service. As the ark was being transported, the oxen pulling the cart stumbled, and a man named Uzzah took hold of the ark. God’s anger burned against Uzzah and He struck him down and he died. What was Uzzah’s offense? In attempting to stabilize the Ark and keep it from falling to the ground, he assumed that his hands were less polluted than the dirt of the ground. The earth was not defiled. It was Uzzah that broke the law of God (Numbers 4:15; they were taught not to touch the holy things of God). If you are a true believer, reading this passage should encourage you to take the things of God seriously. We need to remember that the LORD God is Holy, Holy, Holy. We need an upgrade in our reverential attitude toward our LORD. While Uzzah's intentions may have been pure, intentions never justify committing sin.
