The Necessity of the New Birth

Scripture: John 4:24
"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."

Personal Reflection

No one naturally worships God rightly. Fallen humanity may be religious, but true worship requires spiritual life. This is why the new birth is essential.

Before conversion, a person may admire religion, respect morality, or participate in church activities. Yet genuine worship cannot occur until the Holy Spirit changes the heart.

The Spirit awakens the sinner to his guilt, reveals the beauty of Christ, and creates a new affection for God. What was once a duty becomes a delight. What was once boring becomes precious.

The believer discovers that worship is not merely something done on Sunday morning. It becomes the atmosphere of the Christian life. Every act of obedience, every prayer, every expression of gratitude becomes an act of worship.

This transformation is entirely the work of God's grace.

Contemplation

Do I worship God merely from habit, or from a heart renewed by the Holy Spirit?

Holy Spirit, continue Your sanctifying work within me. Fill my heart with holy affections for Christ and teach me to worship in spirit and truth. Amen.
