Worship Requires Humility

Scripture: James 4:6 (KJV)
"But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble."

Personal Reflection

One of the greatest enemies of true worship is pride. Pride was at the very heart of Cain's offering. Though he brought an excellent gift, it was ultimately rooted in confidence in himself. He approached God through the labor of his own hands and the fruit of his own efforts. Abel, however, came differently. He came acknowledging his need of mercy. He came as a sinner dependent upon God's provision. He came by faith.

Every true act of worship begins where pride ends. Before a man can worship God rightly, he must first see himself rightly. He must recognize that he is a creature before the Creator, a sinner before a holy God, a beggar before the King of Heaven.

The modern world exalts self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-sufficiency. Scripture exalts humility. The proud man wants recognition; the humble man seeks God's glory. The proud man trusts his own wisdom; the humble man clings to God's Word. The proud man seeks to impress others; the humble man seeks to please Christ.

The closer we draw to God, the more we see our own weakness and His greatness. Isaiah cried, "Woe is me!" when he saw the Lord high and lifted up. Peter fell at Christ's feet and declared, "Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord." Such responses are not signs of weakness but marks of genuine worship.

Humility is the soil in which worship flourishes. The soul that bows lowest before God rises highest in spiritual blessing.

Contemplation

Do I come before God as one deserving His favor, or as one wholly dependent upon His grace?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, forgive me for every trace of pride. Teach me to walk humbly before You and to worship You with a heart that depends entirely upon Your grace. Let me glory only in Christ and not in myself. Amen.

Application

Spend time today thanking God specifically for His grace in saving you. Acknowledge before Him that every spiritual blessing you possess is a gift from His hand.
