Three days ago I suggested that you could ask God to make you humble and He would be faithful to do so. 1 Peter 5:5 has been our text verse for the last few days: "Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble." We have seen that our humility is important to God. We are to put humility on like a coat in winter. We have seen that God resists those that are proud but will provide those who walk in humility, the grace to live a grateful life now on earth.
The other day I was preparing to be a representative for a divinity school that was hosting some academic seminars. There were students coming from as far away as California, South Carolina and New Jersey to attend these classes. The school had placed me in charge as well as asked me to instruct one of the classes. As I was writing these devotionals (and I do take my own advice), I wanted God to make me more humble. During the week of the sessions, one night the family dog had an accident on the bedroom carpet. Here I was early in the morning, preparing to "go look like a real important somebody," on my hands and knees cleaning the carpet fighting off the intense desire to be sick from the smell. I looked at my wife and laughed because I saw the significance. This was keeping me humble. God was using the circumstances to answer my prayer. In a week that I would have perhaps had a reason to have a little pride, I was to remember being on my knees cleaning the carpet.
Today, as you go about your day, ask God to make you humble. Don't fear what will occur because He will be faithful and the circumstances will develop a more Christlike character in you. You never need fear how God will answer your prayer. Remember that humility opens the way for God to extend more grace to you. You can't earn it; it is a gift and God seeks the humble to pour out even more grace on those who live obedient lives.
