2-16-2025 Devotion

We are continuing to focus on hearing God. Too many Christians just don't take the time to sit at the feet of Jesus and attend to the "one thing necessary." (Luke 10:42) We live in a busy society with many responsibilities. Bills and the cost of living require most to work to produce the resources to meet these obligations. Yet no matter how busy you are, you must never be too busy to quietly spend time with Jesus listening to His Word. Another way of hearing God is through a devotional reading of the Word. Devotional reading is reading to grow a relationship with God as opposed to reading to just gather information about God. It includes a time of silence, reading, meditating, praying and waiting. The emphasis is not on how much you read (a single verse is sufficient), but how deep you delve into the verse. This is not surface reading, this is like digging for gold.

Deuteronomy 30:14 says: "But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it." This verse gives us the understanding of devotional reading. As we slowly read the Word, it gets down in our hearts (that is we embrace it lovingly), in our mouths and it leads us to a place of obedience. How would you describe how you read the Bible? If one follows the pattern of devotional reading, the Word can become the voice of God to you.

Today, set aside some time to read the Word slowly. Select a passage and then just wait for a while in silence. Then read it slowly; close your eyes and think about what the verse says. Ask God to speak to you through the passage and stay before Him enjoying the moment. This can be the best part of your day. Make sure to shut out distractions or ignore them. God is waiting for you to spend time with Him.
