2-23-2025 Devotion

We have been looking at practicing the presence of God. One aspect of that practice is having a time of rest before Him. Has your life ever gotten so busy that it just seems impossible to rest? Are the tasks and duties on the plate of your life so overwhelming that rest may be in your future but not your present? About a week ago, my father-in-law suffered a massive heart attack. At the time of this writing, he is on life support. This has understandably placed a tremendous strain on the entire family. Trips to the hospital, concern for what is going to happen and the already busy schedules of us all, make this a challenging time. Yet, the Bible says in Psalm 62:1: "My soul rests in God alone. My salvation is from him." (World English Bible) Even in the midst of all the circumstances, there is still a rest in God that we need to experience.

The Treasury of David comments on this passage: "My inmost self draws near in reverent obedience to God.  I am no hypocrite or mere posture maker.  To wait upon God, and for God, is the habitual position of faith; to wait on him truly is sincerity; to wait on him only is spiritual chastity. The original is, "only to God is my soul silence."  The presence of God alone could awe his heart into quietude, submission, rest, and acquiescence; but when that was felt, not a rebellious word or thought broke the peaceful silence.  The proverb that speech is silver but silence is gold, is more than true in this case.  No eloquence in the world is half so full of meaning as the patient silence of a child of God."

Today, no matter how busy, no matter the circumstances, find a time to rest before God. It is essential to dealing with whatever comes today. It is essential to your spiritual growth. Take time to rest. Make time to rest. It may not be easy and don't make excuses. As the shoe commercial says: "just do it!"
