The Gospel Cure for Discouragement

The Gospel Cure for Discouragement

Scripture:
“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God.” — Psalm 42:11

Personal Reflection:
William Bridge begins by saying, “A believer’s soul may be cast down, yet not cast off.” I have often confused my feelings with my faith, thinking that my sadness meant God had withdrawn. Yet Bridge reminds me that my Savior’s love is constant even when my emotions falter.

Contemplation:
Faith does not deny sorrow—it redirects it. The downcast soul learns to talk to itself, not listen to itself, and to argue from God’s promises, not from despair.

Prayer:
Lord, when I am bowed down with grief or guilt, lift my eyes to You. Let faith speak louder than fear.

Challenge:
Write one Scripture promise that contradicts your current fear—and speak it aloud three times today.
