Jeremiah 17: 9: "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it." In the Old Testament, the “heart” is more than the seat of emotion. It represents the entire character, including the mind and the will. This is true of your heart and my heart. Unfortunately, we all have heart trouble. The Hebrew word translated "wicked" means: incurable, beyond cure; despairing. The prophet is telling us under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that your heart is incurably evil. That is why the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans that no one seeks after God. You can't seek after Him because you have a wickedly corrupt heart. Now you should understand why I say salvation is a supernatural event. On your own, you would never be saved. However, when God grants you grace, repentance, and faith, you can come to Him and repent and have faith to be born again. I'm thankful God didn't leave me with a deceitful heart. What about you?
