We are continuing to look at developing our devotional life. I am a firm believer that one should employ a good Bible commentary to aid in understanding difficult passages. The rule is context, context, context. You must read a verse in context and a commentary will help you gain understanding. Colossians 3: 15 reads: " And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful." This verse is misinterpreted by many (this means most) people to suggest that if you are having to make a decision about something, you let "peace" be your guide. Whatever you feel most peaceful is the way to go. The problem is, that is not what the verse is about. Matthew Henry wrote: "Let this peace rule in your heart—prevail and govern there, or as an umpire decide all matters of difference among you.”—To which you are called in one body. We are called to this peace, to peace with God as our privilege and peace with our brethren as our duty. Being united in one body, we are called to be at peace one with another, as the members of the natural body; for we are the body of Christ, and members in particular, 1 Cor. 12:27." The verse is speaking about having peace with God and with your brethren. Peace with God as our privilege and peace with our brethren as a duty. The commentary would help keep people from misinterpreting Scripture and making bad decisions. I have known many bad decisions that were made because someone felt "peace" about it. Don't be deceived.
